Necrons in 6th

I just had a great game of 6th Ed with my Necrons against Richard's Eldar and IG. Though I have played one other game of 6th with Tony (What's up LC?), we pretty much ignored many of the 6th Ed rules that we did not understand (which was most of them). Richard was gearing up for a tourny and so was being a big stickler for the rules (which was awesome). I am not going to do a Battle Report but will hit the main points bullet-style.

  • Eldrad is wicked! He stuck them in a unit of Harlequins and kept giving them 2++ saves and himself a 3++ save. They weathered so many hits it was silly. I had no flamers to take them out so they mauled me.
  • War Walkers have to be dealt with early. They killed all my Scarabs and half of those were in Overwatch. Then they killed two Wraiths attached to my D Lord and put two wounds on him. I don't care what your save is, if you have 20 wounds put on you per turn, you will fail saves.
  • There is no such thing as a guaranteed charge! I snake eyed with my C'Tan charging the Avatar from 4". On the other hand, I was able to charge over 6" several times. Never ever take it for granted that you'll get the charge and always have a unit backing up the unit that you want to charge for a counter assault.
  • WTF! Vendettas are brutal! At around 120 points (I don't have the codex in front of me), it is a steal at twice the points cost. It has armor 12 like the Storm Raven and is loaded with twin linked Las Cannons. It can carry a bunch of vets or whatever that jump out and melta or flamer people's face off. It's great as a tank hunter, a fighter, a transport, and cheap to boot! I'm gonna get one as soon as this Embargo is lifted. Maybe sooner.
  • The Catacomb Command Barge is amazing! The new rules for Chariots are awesome. A vehicle that can charge, +1 save, 1d6 S6 auto-hits and Jink. What's not to love? Getting assaulted with such a big footprint is difficult. Also, do you have to attack the dude in the Barge or can you attack the Barge first? Enemies can attack the base or the hull, so does that mean the Lord can attack through either or just the base? Can the Barge fly off on its own if the guys dies? I'll have to look into this.
  • The Monolith has a Jink save. WTH? It is a skimmer and all skimmers have Jink. I can't find anything that says it does not. Weird.

There were some other interesting things that happened but that's all I can remember now. 6th Ed is a very different animals and there are lots of changes. I need to get more games under my belt.

  1. What up, brutha?!

Sounds like a good scrap. Did he have any other IG stuff or basically just some air cav?

Also, my kid thinks he wants to sell his Necrons. Are you interested at all? I know he has two monoliths and a grip of warriors but I'm not sure what else.

    1. He had some Griffin or Medusa mortars. I can't remember what they are called but they crippled the Monolith and were erasing a unit each turn. They are paper tigers because when I shot them, they blew up good.

Those Valkyres/Vendettas are not AirCav. They are AirI-Win-The-Game. Unless you get rear armor, they are damn hard to kill. Even Las Cannons only pen them on 4+ and you only hit on 6's. The Hydra flak tank hits easy but can only glance it on 6's. It seems like they are invunerable but can rain down Las Cannons on you with impunity.

After thinking on his list a bit, it was not built with any fluff in mind. He did have 4 Troops but they were bare bones and just there for grabbing objectives. the real hammer of his army were Eldrad joined to the Harlequins and the Avatar. Why would Eldrad be hanging out with Harlequins? His allies were nto taken for any fluffy reasons but to fill tatical gaps in his army.

As for your son's Necrons, I would love to buy them but there is an Embargo on. I'm trying to save money to move and paying off bills.

    2. Huh. Bummer. I'd much rather play an army that is in some way fluffy, even if it loses most of the time. I'd heard that aviation was king now but I haven't played against any and don't intend to buy any. If I have to, I'll buy some anti-air. I hear missile launchers are good but again, no experience and I still don't have the damned rule book.

I'll let him know about his Necrons. Do you know anybody who might be interested at all or should I hit up CraigsList or something? I've never sold an army before.

    3. I don't get this comment system so I do not know if you'll get a notification.

To combat aircraft you pretty much need aircraft. Any army can now buy fortifications which can include the flak quad gun and the Icarus lascannon. Other than that you need aircraft to kill aircraft. It is a little silly. I am sure that as 6th goes on, we'll see both more aircraft and anti-aircraft units.

There is some shady reasoning that all Space Marine missile launchers now have skyfire based on nothing substantial. I dont't fly like that (pun intended).

Really the way you want to deal with aircraft is to get a Valkyrie or Vendetta. They are a steal for the points cost and are going to dominate the skies. Fill them full of Vets and make them your special forces.

As for the Necrons you are looking to get rid of, Bartertown is the place. You can sell them or (better yet) trade them for something you do want. You could get more Orks or IG. Maybe some aircraft.

    4. I just don't like non-fluffy stuff. Especially if the sole reason for it is so GW can sell me some models I don't really want. I'm a tanker by trade and preference. Bugger the zoomies. I'll have to build myself some Hydra turrets, I guess, although I understand they've been nerfed now.

Thanks for the recommendation on bartertown. I'll check into it.
